Jamás imaginamos que podríamos entrevistar a Dark Oath y aquí estamos. Para nosotros (o más bien para mí), Dark Oath es una de las bandas referentes dentro del death melódico y sinfónico, e incluso los incluí en el top 3 de mis mejores discos de 2024.
Gracias a Madrid Death Fest, esta entrevista ha sido posible, y además organizan el próximo 16 de mayo un concierto en el que estarán presentes tanto Dark Oath (por primera vez) como Rise Of The Shadows en la Sala Godfather Rock Club de Madrid. Consigue ya tu entrada en el siguiente link.

English 1. Para empezar, hablemos de vuestro último álbum. Para nosotros, Riff Valley, fue una auténtica maravilla e incluso gente del equipo añadió a Ages of Man (2024) en su top 10 anual. ¿Podéis decirnos brevemente cómo ha sido vuestra evolución desde When Fire Engulfs the Earth (2016) hasta este nuevo álbum? ¿Ha cambiado mucho su sonido Dark Oath durante estos últimos 8-9 años?
Como han pasado 8 años entre un álbum y otro, hemos madurado como compositores y como personas, y nuestras influencias e inspiraciones han cambiado. Y teniendo en cuenta que cambiamos el tema lírico, intentamos reflejar ese cambio también en el paisaje sonoro de la música, pero por supuesto sin dejar atrás el núcleo de nuestro sonido. Personalmente, creo que conseguimos hacer esa transición con éxito.
2. Por supuesto, necesitamos preguntaros acerca de la temática de Ages of Man (2024). Nos apasiona lo conceptual y vuestro álbum de principio a fin se basa en las eras de la humanidad según el poeta de la Antigua Grecia Hesíodo. ¿Por qué esta temática?
Sabíamos que para este álbum queríamos seguir escribiendo sobre una civilización/mitología europea. Acabamos eligiendo la antigua Grecia, pero, para ser sinceros, sin ninguna razón en particular. Investigamos mucho y el tema concreto de la supuesta decadencia de la humanidad a través de una perspectiva mitológica nos pareció interesante. Sigue siendo épica, pero también puede interpretarse con una lente moderna.
3. Una de las cosas que más nos apasionan de Dark Oath es cómo combináis la brutalidad vocal de Sara con la gran técnica instrumental del resto de componentes consiguiendo un resultado MUY épico y único. Quizá es pronto para saberlo pero, ¿qué nos espera del futuro cercano de la banda en cuanto a sonido? ¿Seguirá en esta línea o tenéis nuevas ideas y nuevo rumbo?
La fórmula seguirá siendo la misma, aunque para el próximo álbum elegiremos una nueva mitología/civilización e intentaremos reflejarla de nuevo en el paisaje sonoro. Así que puede que haya algunos sonidos nuevos dependiendo del tema lírico, que es la razón por la que queremos cambiar de tema cada álbum, nos da libertad para explorar nuevas ideas y sonidos. El reto acaba siendo explorar esas ideas sin desviarnos demasiado de lo que nos hace sonar como sonamos.
4. Hablemos de vuestro próximo concierto del 16 de mayo en Madrid. Por lo que hemos visto, es vuestra primera vez en Madrid, y en parte nos sorprende ya que sois «vecinos». El pasado 2024 también estuvisteis por Galicia, Cataluña… y ojalá este primer concierto en Madrid sea el primero de muchos más en nuestro país. ¿Qué expectativas tenéis del concierto y del público español?
Estamos muy emocionados por nuestro debut en Madrid, por supuesto, ¡y esperamos que sea el primero de muchos! Tenemos muchos amigos de otras bandas que han tocado en Madrid antes y no hemos oído más que cosas buenas sobre el público de allí, así que no podemos esperar a experimentarlo también.
5. Siguiendo con este tema, ¿qué opináis de la escena metal en España? ¿Conocéis alguna banda de nuestra escena?
La escena española nos recuerda mucho a la portuguesa, al fin y al cabo somos vecinos.
Conocemos muchas bandas underground españolas de múltiples géneros, aunque probablemente prestemos más atención a las bandas que tocan folk metal y death metal melódico.
6. Y ahora hablemos de la escena portuguesa. Desde España, tenemos en gran estima todo lo que se hace allí, con auténticos referentes como Moonspell o Corpus Christii, hasta bandas más modernas y en auge como Gaerea o vosotros mismos. ¿Qué bandas referentes portuguesas tenéis? Y fuera de Portugal, ¿cuáles son vuestras principales influencias?
Por supuesto que Moonspell son los reyes del metal portugués, y admiramos su carrera, pero también respetamos y admiramos los trabajos de bandas más jóvenes como Analepsy, Gaerea, The Voynich Code, y muchas más. Bandas que consideramos nuestros pares.
En cuanto a influencias, algunas bandas serían Wintersun, Insomnium, Ensiferum, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Septicflesh. Pero estamos influenciados por todo en realidad, películas, libros, programas de televisión, videojuegos.
7. En cuanto a giras europeas, ¿con qué bandas habéis podido compartir escenario? Sabemos que habéis estado en el On The Rocks de Helsinki o en el Milagre Metaleiro (que al final es vuestra casa), ¿en qué otros festivales habéis participado? ¿Y en qué festivales os gustaría estar próximamente?
Hemos tenido la suerte de tocar con demasiados grupos como para nombrar a uno en concreto. En cuanto a festivales, hemos tocado en algunos pequeños en Alemania y Francia, y pronto tocaremos en dos más en Alemania. Uno de ellos, el Ragnarök Festival, ha sido un objetivo a largo plazo para nosotros, y estamos muy contentos de que finalmente se haga realidad. Pero por supuesto, nos encantaría tocar en todos los grandes festivales como Wacken, Hellfest, Graspop, Resurrection, Leyendas del Rock, Motocultor, Summer Breeze, y tantos más que afortunadamente como fans del metal tenemos para elegir en Europa.
8. Sabemos que ya han pasado años pero, ¿cómo os afectó el covid a nivel banda? Muchas otras bandas tuvieron que dejar de tocar, y otras muchas se hicieron fuertes y les valió como punto de inflexión de cara a siguientes años.
Teníamos cancelados algunos conciertos internacionales que nos hacían mucha ilusión, pero aprovechamos la situación para trabajar de verdad por fin en nuestro segundo álbum.
9. Siempre acabamos con la misma pregunta porque nos parece divertido. Si tuvieseis que nominar a una banda a la que pudiésemos entrevistar, ¿cuál debería ser? Haremos lo posible por entrevistarla también 😀

1. Let’s start by talking about your latest album. For us at Riff Valley, it was an absolute gem—some of our team even included Ages of Man in their top 10 albums of the year. Could you briefly tell us how the band has evolved from When Fire Engulfs the Earth (2016) to this new release? Has Dark Oath’s sound changed significantly over these past 8-9 years?
Since 8 years passed between albums, we matured as songwriters as well as people, our influences/inspirations changed. And considering we changed the lyrical theme, we tried to reflect that change in the soundscape of the music as well, but of course without leaving behind the core of our sound. Personally I think we managed to make that transition successfully.
2. Of course, we have to ask about the theme behind Ages of Man. We’re passionate about concept albums, and yours is based from start to finish on the ages of humanity as described by the ancient Greek poet Hesiod. What led you to choose this particular concept?
We knew that for this album we wanted to still write about an european civilization/mythology. We ended choosing ancient Greece, but to be honest for no particular reason. We did a lot of research and the particular topic of the supposed decay of mankind through a mythological perspective seemed interesting to us. Still epic but can be interpreted with a modern lens as well.
3. One of the things we love most about Dark Oath is how you combine Sara’s brutal vocals with the incredible instrumental technique of the rest of the band, resulting in something truly epic and unique. It might be too soon to tell, but what can we expect in terms of your future sound? Will you follow the same path or are there new ideas and directions on the horizon?
The formula will remain the same, although for the next album we’ll pick a new mythology/civilization and we’ll try again to reflect that in the soundscape. So, there might be some new sounds depending on the lyrical theme, which is the reason we want to change themes each album, it gives us freedom to explore new ideas and sounds. The challenge ends up being in exploring those ideas without drifting too much from what makes us sound as we do.
4. Let’s talk about your upcoming concert in Madrid on May 16. From what we’ve seen, this will be your first time performing in the city, which actually surprised us since we’re practically “neighbors”. You were in Galicia and Catalonia last year… and we hope this Madrid show is just the first of many more to come in Spain. What are your expectations for this show and for the Spanish crowd?
We’re extremely excited for our debut in Madrid of course, and we hope it’ll be the first of many! We have lots of friends from other bands that have played in Madrid before and we’ve heard nothing but good things about the crowds there, so we can’t wait to experience it as well.
5. Continuing with this topic, what’s your opinion on the metal scene in Spain? Are there any Spanish bands you know or follow?
The Spanish scene reminds us a lot of the Portuguese scene, after all we’re neighbors.
We do know a lot of spanish underground bands from multiple genres, although we probably pay closer attention to bands that play folk metal and melodic death metal.
6. Now let’s turn to the Portuguese scene. From Spain, we hold your scene in high regard—from iconic bands like Moonspell or Corpus Christii to newer rising acts like Gaerea or yourselves. Which Portuguese bands do you look up to? And outside of Portugal, who are your main influences?
Of course Moonspell are the kings of Portuguese metal, and we admire their career, but we also respect and admire the works of younger bands like Analepsy, Gaerea, The Voynich Code, and many more. Bands that we consider our peers.
Regarding influences, a few bands would be Wintersun, Insomnium, Ensiferum, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Septicflesh. But we are influenced by everything really, movies, books, tv shows, video games.
7. Speaking of European tours, which bands have you had the chance to share the stage with? We know you’ve played venues like On The Rocks in Helsinki and festivals like Milagre Metaleiro (which is your home turf), but what other festivals have you played at? And which ones would you love to perform at in the near future?
We’ve been fortunate enough to have played with too many bands to name any specific one. Regarding festivals, we played in a few smaller ones in Germany and France, and soon we’ll play in two more in Germany. One of those, Ragnarök Festival, has been a long term goal for us, and we’re extremely excited to finally make it happen. But of course, we’d love to play all the great festivals like Wacken, Hellfest, Graspop, Resurrection, Leyendas del Rock, Motocultor, Summer Breeze, and so many more that fortunately as fans of metal we have to choose from in Europe.
8. We know it’s been a few years now, but how did the pandemic affect you as a band? Many bands had to stop playing live, while others used the time to grow stronger and reinvent themselves. How was that experience for you?
We did have a few international shows canceled that we were really looking forward to, but we took advantage of the situation to finally truly work on our second album.
9. We always end with the same question because we think it’s fun. If you could nominate one band for us to interview next, who would it be? We’ll do our best to make it happen! 😀
